Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall

About Jade

Jade is a vocalist from the group Little Mix. She is a light-lyric soprano with a vocal range spanning from Eb3 to D6. Vocally she is a standard pop vocalist, who uses R&B influences to move through her singing. In terms of the group, Jade is often regulated to taking over vocals in the background. Because of her style of singing, Jade is usually responsible for ad libs and high notes (that are not designated to Perrie). Because of that, Jade seems like the most likely to alter or play with the song's original melody. She tends to alter things for the fun of it and is much more playful vocally than the other girls in that respect.

Vocal Range: D3-A5-D6
Supported Range: G3-C#5-A5

Lower Register (D3-B3)

Jade's lower register is more or less underdeveloped and just generally weaker compared to the rest of her voice. She can support down to about a G3, which is good for her skill level. Below that however it becomes airy, quiet, or her larynx is being pulled down to achieve low notes.

Mid-Chest (A4-Eb5)

This is where Jade excels vocally. Jade is generally resonant up to about C5, and can maintain support up to C#5. D5 to Eb5 is where she starts to have trouble. Her D5's have shown better consistency, but her Eb5's tend to be thin and not opened enough. However there have been signs of them being open, but not enough to add them to her supported range.

Upper-Chest (E5-A5)

Above Eb5, Jade strains and has yet to show a decent moment technically. Her sound becomes more pushed, whiny as a result of strain. She has never sung above F5 live, so it's hard to determine what she would do, but it can be assumed that vocally, she would not do well.

Head Voice/Falsetto (E5-D6)

Since the Get Weird Tour, Jade has shown a preference for head voice, transitioning from her mix to head voice with cleaner results. Before that she was able to transition into  At one point her sound was airy but still relaxed. Now it is fuller well projected up to G5/G#5. Above that Jade strains (though a case could be made for her A5), and can switch between head voice and falsetto showing a lack of control. Still she is capable of decent melisma throughout her range, which shows some skill of the register and comfortably within it.

Agility

Because of Jade's light voice, she is naturally considered agile, and she utilizes this well. She will do runs, albeit nothing too complex. Her lack of usage of head voice leaves us without an idea of how she transitions between chest to head, but it seems like a skill she can use from how quickly and smoothly she can jump when it does.

Weaknesses

Jade's weakness are most noticeable outside of her comfort zone. While she still keeps great placement in her upper belts, she still suffers from strain past D5. Her lower register while capable of creating tone, is not supported past G3, and she lacks the same facility that she has in her upper register and mix.

Overall/Recap

Jade has shown improvements over the course of singing career. With a lovely voice, she competes with Perrie as the best of the group, however is edged out simply due to Perrie having slightly large range in terms of support. What Jade does have is decent supported range and possible the best use of her voice. She now is a more frequent user of head voice, has respectable agility, and is capable of resonance.
